Womans World Cup
|
Started yesterday if you hadn't noticed!!! Which is pretty hard over here being one of the host countries, absolute wank fest going on in the media, biggest sporting event of the year, billions will watch the games blah blah blah.
Made a big fuss about the "huge" crowd they reckoned would turn up but they were all but giving the tickets away by all accounts, if you want to see game its not like the Men's version, just rock up and if you do have to pay its fuck all.
The Norwegians who by all accounts get paid the same as the men's team lost to NZ in the opening game in Auckland, then Australia beat Ireland without superstar player Sam Kerr who the media reckon is one of the top 10 sporting "Icons" in the world right now......FMOB
Good luck to them but whomever is footing the bill im not sure its all sustainable? And NO im not going.

BBC World are leading with it. Just watched five minutes of Canada vs Nigeria and it's barely League Two standard. The crowd sounds like a primary school on sports day. No thanks.

I think it’s great for them. For young girls to have something like that to aspire to. The stadium was packed for the Irish.
We all know the standard isn’t anywhere near the men’s. But just leave them at it. It’s doing no harm.

Agreed, colly. Well said. It's the hype that's irritating.

That’s because it is full of kids! Quite a few games being played during the week lunchtime kick offs, kids being bused in from all over the place, great for the kids and fills the stadiums up but I’m not sure there is much money in it, think they don’t even have to pay for the tickets and not like bar sales etc will bring any money in!!!

But yeah, good luck to them and all the school excursions to games in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland etc!!!
Just find all the hype a bit much, they are trying to make out this is a big deal and “massive” world sporting event on par with the men’s game but it really is nowhere near!

Canada vs Nigeria
Probably the dullest match ever.
Carney thinks it’s a billion pound industry?

No problem with it at all and may even watch England once in the Semi final, if they make it, but as said the coverage is really going to grate, i.e BBC Sport all over it every day.

Also happy that this is going on. hype and all. I'll watch some of it for sure. I like seeing fit young women enjoying their football. Don't take that as a politically incorrect statement, I'm genuinely pleased for them.

It's sad that even in these "enlightened" times, women's football still has its knockers.

Probably see highlights on the news (unavoidable) but no plans to watch any of it Happy to have a break from football til August 12
That said the fact that young girls are seeing this and have role models that make them want to play sport is a great thing. Especially if they do that rather than watch the Kardashians or Love Island. Sam Kerr is the only footballer I could pick out in the street. Quite a sporting family ...used to watch her Dad play in the WA Aussie rules comp and her brother Daniel was a very good AFL Premiership player .... before his life descended into drugs and violence. He was in jail but might be out now. The press for womens football is very cuddly ... if that was a male player the tabloids would be all over it.

Every day brings a new gripe from the Lionesses which the BBC love to tell us about
Bonuses White shorts are bad. Football boots are not designed for women. Cruciate injuries affect women more than men.
Todays moan is from the goalkeeper Wyatt Earp who thinks it’s very disrespectful to her that kids can’t buy her goalkeepers shirt, absolute disgrace etc etc etc
Stop fucking moaning and just play football.

Definitely a good thing, a best of luck to the ladies.
Baring all the bollocks it's good to see the profile rise and The levels improve, although I suspect there will be we some shocking Teams out there.
Football club I'm at are trying really hard to get the girls in, we've got some good teams but need more, hopefully this will encourage some more to join.

As the father of a girl who played her sport at a very high level, I know how proud the families must feel. I wish the Lionesses the best of luck. Their game should not be compared to the men's game in any way. I for one will be watching our girls and supporting them as much as the men. Bring it home ladies.

Always amazed at the number of caps some of these players have. One of the Canadians has 324 caps! Do they play every week?

Considering how much moaning there was on here about the shit Moyes was serving up last season I'm surprised there isn't a bit more enthusiasm for this comparative adrenaline-fest.
I'll tune in tomorrow to give England a chance to impress and take it from there.
